Q&A: All About Acupuncture for Fertility

Having a baby is one of the most joyous parts of life. All too often, it can also bring stress. The uncertainty behind infertility is a problem faced by many. Did you know that acupuncture for fertility support is often recommended? Our team of acupuncturists often works with people like you looking for answers. They are here to tackle some frequently asked questions breaking down what you need to know.

Can you tell me about acupuncture and infertility?

According to the Mayo Clinic, about 10 to 20 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Traditional Chinese medicine suggests acupuncture as a supportive treatment prior to conception. While it does not necessarily directly impact fertility, it is believed to improve conditions. This includes preparing the body and treating pregnancy risk factors. Autoimmune disorders, infections and hormones are often causes of miscarriage. Lifestyle can also play a role, from smoking to drinking alcohol or heightened consumption of caffeine. Metabolic conditions such as diabetes can have an impact as well.

What is the treatment for infertility?

Every case is different. It depends on those above listed factors and other genetic conditions. When our AcuMantras team works with those looking to become parents, we focus on preventative care. This is the Traditional Chinese approach to acupuncture, to avoid issues before they arise. When it comes to fertility, the same idea follows. An AcuMantras acupuncturist will focus on correcting problems by redirecting the flow of energy in the body. This is known as Qi in the traditional approach. The result is a focus on hormones, which can also decrease bloating and nausea. Additionally, acupuncture is often turned to for relaxation support, another important factor in fertility.

What role does acupuncture play in balancing hormones?

As we mentioned, hormonal imbalances can often lead to miscarriages. Acupuncture steps in to regulate reproductive hormones to generate a response. It can also promote improving blood flow and nurturing a more fertile environment. This includes a thicker uterine lining and ovulation.

Thinking about acupuncture for fertility? How often should you attend treatments?

Acupuncture treatments typically begin about three months in advance of IVF or other planning. One to two treatments per week to start is the usual plan of action. Sessions can last up to an hour. Again, every case is different and treatment plans need to be tailored accordingly. Be sure to talk to your doctor and your acupuncturist during the initial consultation.

How do I find an acupuncturist?

When looking for an acupuncturist, be sure to do your research. You will want a team who is certified and brings real-life experience. Licenses vary from state to state, but anyone valid will have no problem presenting verification. Also find a team that operates a clean center. This includes sterile, single use needles and sanitation protocols.

Especially during COVID, ensure you feel safe. Is the staff wearing masks and gloves? Are they cleaning between sessions? This will help you reach that state of relaxation. Also look for somewhere that is convenient to travel to. During a session, you might fall asleep. This is a good thing! Some do need a few minutes to wake up before traveling home.

At AcuMantras, our Plantation, Florida practice is conveniently located to service the tri-county area. Some acupuncturists specialize in fertility-related services. Don’t be afraid to ask questions before beginning. You have enough to worry about. Your acupuncturist should not be one of them.

Will insurance cover acupuncture?

Depending on your plan, your acupuncture services might be covered. Be sure to check with your carrier. If not, practices do offer varying payment options. At AcuMantras, our mission is to provide affordable, effective and empowering holistic treatment for everyone. We work with a variety of sponsors and donors whose generosity allows us to service and educate a larger community.

What are some acupuncture side effects?

Many are nervous for their first acupuncture session. We get it. Needles are not everyone’s favorite. Don’t let these stop you. Most people do not feel a thing. Some do experience slight bruising at the insertion site at first, but this is extremely rare. Those with blood thinning conditions should talk to their acupuncturists to discuss their options. After an acupuncture session, we mentioned you might feel drowsy and relaxed. This is 100 percent normal and expected.
