Holistic Treatment for Children with Special Needs
Special needs children include those who have been identified as having disabilities or disorders that affect their development, such as ADHD, dyslexia, and autism, as well as those with physical challenges. All children require support to help them reach their full potential and overcome any challenges they may face. Those living with special needs may require support that they are not receiving at school or outside the home in general. It is our desire to bridge the gap, providing additional information to further support the parents of children whose needs are not currently being met.
Holistic treatment for children with special needs involves addressing the physical, emotional, social, and cognitive aspects of their development. This approach recognizes that all aspects of a child's life are interconnected and that a child's well-being and progress are best supported through a comprehensive and collaborative approach.
Some natural treatments that may benefit children with special needs include:
Nutritional therapy: A balanced and nutrient-dense diet can support brain health and cognitive function, as well as physical development and health. Supplementation such as omega-3 fatty acids and B vitamins can be helpful.
Exercise: Regular physical activity can improve cognitive function, reduce stress, and improve mood.
Mind-body therapies: Techniques such as meditation, homeopathy, yoga, ear seed acupuncture, aromatherapy, and acupressure can help reduce anxiety and depression, improving mood, focus, and attention.
Behavioral therapy: Therapy focused on developing skills and behaviors that support learning and social interaction. This therapy is also useful in teaching kids to be independent, thus providing more confidence in their own abilities.
It's important to remember that every child is unique, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to treating learning disabilities. A holistic approach that considers the individual needs and strengths of each child can lead to better outcomes and improved quality of life.
What Types of Holistic Treatments are commonly used?
Acupressure: Acupressure is similar to acupuncture, as it utilizes the same channel and meridian system as acupuncture. The difference between the two is that we use pressure, either with a tool or our hands, to stimulate the points along the channels. This can be particularly useful when working with children in general. Children living with disabilities may have some difficulty communicating or receiving communication, and they may have reservations about acupuncture needles. Using the hand with touch and pressure can not only be restorative, but also soothing. This can be a useful tool in treating an array of conditions both physical and emotional, including bowel issues, incontinence, insomnia, fatigue, anxiety, and depression.
Homeopathies: Homeopathic medicine is one of the safest ways to treat your child. Homeopathic medicine is made through a series of dilutions. The idea is, the more a remedy is diluted, the more potent it becomes. Although the tincture becomes clear after dilution, the remaining liquid has been changed on a molecular level. Homeopathy uses the theory that “like cures like”. For example, the remedy Allium Cepa (onion) is often used to treat allergies. When you think of the effects of cutting an onion, you may get watery eyes and a runny nose, thus in theory, that which causes the symptom can cure the symptom.
Aromatherapy: Aromatherapy is another noninvasive option for children. This uses the sense of smell to invoke different effects. For example, lavender is useful for its soothing and calming effects, while peppermint can be used for invigoration. These essential oils can also be used to help physical conditions as well. Peppermint can be useful when one has congestion or even a headache. Essential oils can be a great compliment to the other modalities listed, either in a diffuser or simply on a cotton ball placed near the patient. It's important not to rub the oil directly on the child as they may have an adverse reaction on their skin.
Ears Seeds: In acupuncture, we have several microcosms in the body. A microcosm is a lotion on the body that can be used to treat the whole body. The scalp is one of them, as is the ear. Ear seeds utilized the knowledge of auricular (ear) acupuncture to treat the entire body. Instead of puncturing these points with a needle, we use ear seeds. Ear seeds are exactly that. They are tiny seeds that are placed on the points we wish to stimulate like a tiny band-aid. They can be stimulated throughout the day by applying pressure, and they are easily removed.
Nutrition: Nutrition may be one of the most essential and overlooked factors in our children's health and well-being. There are challenges in getting our children to eat the foods that have the most benefits, as they don’t always taste the best. A lot of times we don't have the time or the energy to ensure they receive all they need to thrive, and sometimes we're just grateful they are eating at all. However, short-term gain can lead to long-term issues. Elevated blood sugar, blood pressure, and cholesterol can be mitigated by a proper diet. Basic guidelines, like increasing whole foods, decreasing packaged, canned and boxed foods, and monitoring sugar intake can make an impact on their digestion as well as their overall health.
Using Oils, Homeopathics, and Ear Seeds
It is important to note that the use of essential oils, homeopathic remedies, and ear seeds for treating children with special needs should only be done under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider. These treatments can be used in conjunction with other therapies and interventions, but they should not be used as a sole or primary treatment method.
Essential Oils: Essential oils are natural extracts from plants that have been used for centuries to support physical, emotional, and mental health. When used safely and appropriately, essential oils may help alleviate symptoms associated with conditions such as anxiety, ADHD, and autism in special needs kids. Some essential oils that may be helpful to include lavender, chamomile, peppermint, and lemon. These oils can be diffused in the air, applied topically (diluted with a carrier oil), or added to a bath.
Homeopathic Remedies: Homeopathic remedies are natural medicines made from plant, animal, and mineral substances. They work by stimulating the body's natural healing response and can be used to treat a wide range of conditions in special needs kids, including allergies, sleep disturbances, and digestive issues. Homeopathic remedies are individualized to each person’s specific needs and symptoms and are prescribed by a licensed physician.
Ear Seeds: Ear seeds are tiny seeds that are applied to specific points on the ear to stimulate the body's natural healing response. They can be used to treat a variety of conditions, including anxiety, ADHD, and insomnia. Ear seeds are non-invasive, painless, and can be left in place for up to five days. They are typically used in conjunction with other therapies, such as acupuncture or acupressure.
Again, it is crucial to seek guidance from a qualified healthcare provider before using any of these treatments on your child.
The Role Nutrition Plays in the Health of Children with Special Needs
Nutrition plays a vital role in the health and well-being of children with special needs. Proper nutrition can help support cognitive and physical development, boost immune function, and prevent or manage chronic health conditions. Here are three nutrients that are particularly important for children with special needs:
Essential Fatty Acids: Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids are essential for brain function and development, immune system function, and reducing inflammation. These nutrients can be found in fatty fish, nuts, seeds, and oils. Supplementing with omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish oil, may be helpful for children with ADHD, autism, or other neurological conditions.
Carnitine: Carnitine is an amino acid that is important for energy metabolism and cardiovascular health. It can be found in meat, fish, and dairy products. Children with some types of genetic disorders or neuromuscular conditions may have a deficiency in carnitine, which can lead to fatigue, muscle weakness, and other symptoms.
Antioxidants: Antioxidants, such as vitamin C, vitamin E, and beta-carotene, are essential for protecting the body from oxidative stress, which can contribute to chronic health conditions. These nutrients can be found in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and seeds. Children with disabilities, particularly those with autism, may have higher levels of oxidative stress, making antioxidant-rich foods and supplements beneficial.
It's important for parents and caregivers to work with a healthcare provider or registered dietitian to ensure their child's nutrition needs are being met. Nutritional supplements or dietary modifications may be necessary to address specific deficiencies or health concerns, but may not be necessary for all children.
Educating Parents on Symptom Management
Parents play a crucial role in their child's treatment plan and can help manage their child's symptoms at home. Here are some tips for parents.
Tips for managing symptoms of autism, ADHD, and other conditions at home:
Create a predictable routine and stick to it.
Break tasks into smaller, manageable steps.
Use positive reinforcement and praise.
Limit screen time and provide structured activities.
Use visual aids, such as picture schedules or charts, to help with communication and organization.
Incorporating nutrition at home:
Offer a variety of whole foods, including fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean protein.
Limit processed and sugary foods and drinks. Try to avoid foods that come in a can or a box.
Consider consulting with a registered dietitian for guidance on specific dietary needs.
How to use oils at home:
Always use essential oils safely and under the guidance of a qualified healthcare provider.
Diffuse essential oils in a well-ventilated area.
Dilute essential oils with a carrier oil before applying topically.
Use caution with certain oils around children with respiratory conditions.
Parents should work closely with their child's healthcare provider to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses their child's individual needs and symptoms. Regular communication with the healthcare provider and tracking of symptoms can help inform adjustments to the treatment plan over time.
